Part 8 Dilys’s Multi-coloured Dream quilt

Assembling the quilt

All the squares need to be quilted and trimmed to 10” blocks before moving onto the assembly stage.

Quilting

Trimming

The blocks are joined together with a 1” strip on the front and 1 ½” strip on the back. Here is an over-view of the method which I have mentioned many times before. With RS together, join the strips at the same time to the edge of one block.

First seam

Place and pin the blocks RS together, lining up the edges. Sew the top 1” strip only onto the edge of the next block.

Pin the strip

When sewing, there will be just enough room for a 1” foot along the edge to be sewn.

Under the machine

This is what the back looks like after sewing. The raw edges of the blocks meet and the seam has been pressed flat.

Back

Fold the raw edge of the back strip to meet the line of stitches and press.

First fold

Press the folded edge over again to cover the raw edges of the seam. This edge will be sewn down by hand using a matching thread.

Second fold

A lot of progress was made this week and here are the strips on my design wall awaiting the hand sewing.

Strips

Before I can join the lines of blocks to make the quilt, I need to add the triangles that go round the edge. This is because I have chosen the set the blocks ‘on point’. Here is the plan to show the two types of triangle that I will need. I will need 4 of the red triangles, one for each corner. The straight grain needs to go along the two short edges so that the corners don’t distort. I will need 22 of the green triangles with the straight grain going along the long edge for the same reason.

Fabrics

The final stage will be featured next week with one finished quilt …. Says she hopefully!!
