Another Granddaughter’s birthday and another chair to upholster! I made a better fist of the second one but it’s still not brilliant. Neither of the Granddaughters will notice however and the chairs will now get used.

Chairs re-covered

I needed to make a second cushion, in pinks this time, and I started doodling simple fish shapes for raw edge appliqué.

Fish shapes

The letters needed to be traced on a fusible layer first and isn’t it great when the magazine editors print the letters in reverse so that they are easily copied onto the fusible.

Alphabet

The letters were positioned onto the background fabric first. It was very useful that the background fabric had lines on to help with placement.

Name

Laying the proposed border on first as a colour guide, I traced and cut out the shapes for the fish from scraps of fabric.

Progress

Once the final position of the applique pieces had been chosen, they were ironed to stick them down. The 1½” borders were added and the whole cushion front was placed onto the wadding layer ready for appliquéing.

Applique

I chose to do a free-motion straight stitch with black thread around all the shapes to hold them down. These cushions (10” square) are not going to be laundered all the time so raw edge applique was going to be sufficient for their decorative purpose.

Free motion stitch

I also added a small area of detail in a variegated thread to complete. An over-lapped back was used to complete this very quick but effective project.
